At the same dosage level, TBHQ demonstrates superior antioxidant performance in refined rapeseed oil.

Direct Method

The fat or oil is heated to 60–70 °C, after which TBHQ is added at the required dosage. The mixture is then agitated vigorously for 10–15 minutes to ensure complete dissolution. Agitation should be continued for an additional approximately 20 minutes—without excessive intensity to avoid air entrainment—to ensure uniform distribution of TBHQ throughout the oil.

Concentrate method

A concentrated TBHQ solution is first prepared by completely dissolving TBHQ in a small amount of fat or oil, or in 95% ethanol, to obtain a 5–10% TBHQ concentrate. The prepared concentrate is then added directly, or via a metering device, into the bulk fat or oil, followed by agitation to ensure uniform distribution of TBHQ.

Pump-Mixing Method

The concentrated TBHQ solution prepared by the Concentrate Method is fed into the inlet of the circulating pump. A stainless-steel proportioning pump is used to accurately meter the TBHQ concentrate into the oil at the specified dosage. Sufficient turbulence should be ensured to allow thorough mixing of TBHQ in the oil before the mixture reaches the storage tank.

Spray Method

For food products such as cured meat products, dried fish products, and nuts, a diluted TBHQ solution may be applied either by spraying directly onto the surface or by immersion. The concentration of the TBHQ solution can be adjusted according to the specific requirements of different food products. Care must be taken to ensure uniform distribution of TBHQ over the product surface.

Mixing Method

TBHQ is blended directly and uniformly with solid ingredients.

Notes

TBHQ must be fully dissolved in oil to achieve optimal antioxidant performance.

The maximum dosage of TBHQ shall not exceed 0.02% (200 ppm), calculated based on the oil or fat content.

Citric acid may be used to enhance the antioxidant activity of TBHQ.

TBHQ should not be used in combination with propyl gallate (PG).

Avoid using TBHQ under alkaline conditions.
