Product Features

Oat Beta-Glucan is a water-soluble dietary fiber with a white to light yellow appearance and a neutral taste, making it easy to incorporate into a wide range of food and beverage formulations. It is an ideal functional ingredient for enhancing both nutritional value and product performance.

Excellent water solubility, delivering a clean, smooth mouthfeel and helping to enhance beverage texture.

Stable under acidic, alkaline, and thermal conditions, making it suitable for various food processing applications.

Good viscosity and emulsifying properties, contributing to improved emulsion stability and providing fat-mimetic functionality, ideal for use in low-fat formulations.

Strong water-holding capacity, which helps extend the shelf life of baked goods such as biscuits and cakes by optimizing moisture retention.

Physiological Functions

Oat Beta-Glucan is a unique soluble dietary fiber extracted from oats. It enables food and beverage products to deliver the well-recognized health benefits of oats, including helping to maintain normal cholesterol levels, reducing postprandial glycaemic response, and supporting digestive health.

Maintaining Healthy Cholesterol Levels

Over the years, numerous clinical studies worldwide have demonstrated that Oat Beta-Glucan can effectively reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and total cholesterol levels. Elevated cholesterol is a recognized risk factor for coronary heart disease, and the incorporation of oat beta-glucan into foods helps support heart health.

Research has shown that, compared with a control group, a daily intake of 5 g of oat beta-glucan can reduce total cholesterol by up to 7.4%. Furthermore, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has approved a health claim stating that oat beta-glucan contributes to the reduction of blood cholesterol levels. A daily intake of 3 g of beta-glucan has been shown to reduce serum lipid concentrations, thereby lowering the risk of coronary heart disease.

Reducing Postprandial Glycaemic Response

Oat Beta-Glucan is a bioactive ingredient known for its ability to reduce postprandial glycaemic response. Clinical studies have shown that consuming at least 4 g of oat beta-glucan per 30 g of available carbohydrates can significantly reduce the rise in blood glucose levels after a meal.

In a study evaluating the postprandial effects of a 5 g intake of oat beta-glucan, compared with a control group, blood glucose levels were reduced by 19% at 30 minutes (p < 0.005) and by 16% at 60 minutes (p < 0.066) after meal consumption.

Furthermore, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has approved a health claim stating that the consumption of oat beta-glucan contributes to the reduction of postprandial blood glucose response, provided that the product contains at least 4 g of beta-glucan per 30 g of available carbohydrates.

Supporting Digestive System Health

Oat Beta-Glucan supports digestive and colonic health by modulating the composition and metabolic activity of the gut microbiota, enhancing intestinal water retention, and being fermented by intestinal bacteria to produce beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).

Based on in vitro intestinal fermentation models, oat beta-glucan has been shown to produce higher levels of butyrate than other dietary fibers. This contributes to improved colon health, as butyrate is the primary energy source for colon cells (colonocytes) and has also been shown to possess anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties.
