Application of Rosemary Extract in Pet Food
Jul. 28, 2023
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family and the genus Rosmarinus. It is a common shrub that has been used for thousands of years as a savory seasoning, in food preservation, antioxidant applications, cosmetics, and hair care, as well as a herbal remedy for various diseases.
In the pet food sector, hundreds of studies and publications have demonstrated that rosemary possesses broad-spectrum antioxidant activity. Its primary active compounds are carnosic acid and carnosol. Rosemary extract is therefore commonly used as a preservative and antioxidant in pet food formulations.
Prevention of Oxidation and Rancidity
Rosemary extract is a natural antioxidant widely used in the pet food industry to prevent oxidation and rancidity. It helps maintain the freshness and quality of pet food over extended storage periods, enhances nutritional value, extends shelf life, reduces food waste, and improves overall pet food quality and health.
In addition, rosemary extract serves as a natural alternative to synthetic antioxidants such as BHA and BHT, which may be associated with potential health concerns. Studies by Xia Tianjuan et al. have shown that, at the same concentration, carnosic acid exhibits significantly higher antioxidant activity than synthetic antioxidants such as PG, BHT, BHA, and vitamin E, while being slightly less effective than TBHQ. The IC₅₀ value for DPPH radical scavenging was 2.53 μg/mL, and the IC₅₀ value for ABTS radical scavenging was 51.58 μg/mL [1].

Enhancing Flavor and Palatability of Pet Food
In addition to its preservative function, rosemary extract is also used to enhance the flavor and improve the palatability of pet food. The taste of pet food is critical for encouraging food intake and maintaining a healthy appetite in cats and dogs. In general, cats and dogs possess more sensitive taste receptors and a more acute sense of smell than humans, which strongly influences their food preferences.
Studies have shown that rosemary extract has a positive effect on the flavor and palatability of cat food. Natural compounds in rosemary extract, such as rosmarinic acid and essential oils, impart a distinctive aroma and flavor. These compounds not only stimulate appetite but also enhance the overall sensory experience for cats, making mealtime more enjoyable. In a controlled study, cats were offered two types of food—one containing rosemary extract and the other without it. The cats consistently showed a preference for the food containing rosemary extract, indicating its effectiveness in improving palatability.
Other Benefits
Although rosemary extract has long been used in pet food as a preservative and antioxidant, it is well recognized that it can also serve as a nutritional supplement offering multiple health benefits. Studies suggest that rosemary extract provides several potential health advantages for pets, including anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which may help prevent and manage infections and diseases. Research by Yanagitai M. et al. [2] demonstrated that carnosic acid exerts neuroprotective effects and suppresses the activation of the mouse microglial cell line MG6 induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vitro by inducing Phase II detoxifying enzyme genes. This mechanism inhibits the expression and release of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and IL-6, thereby exerting anti-inflammatory effects.
In addition, rosemary extract may help improve digestion and enhance immune function, contributing to overall pet health.
As a valuable component of pet food formulations, rosemary extract provides a natural and effective solution for preserving pet food while enhancing its nutritional value and flavor, making it an ideal choice for pet owners who prioritize the health and well-being of their pets.
