Aug. 29, 2023

From a comprehensive portfolio of functional ingredients to diversified application solutions, L&P Food Ingredient Co., Ltd. (L&P Foods) has long been a trusted partner for brand owners. By deeply exploring the multiple functionalities of its ingredients, L&P Foods fully leverages their applications across the food, feed, cosmetics, and industrial sectors, and has developed a wide range of solutions, including zero-sugar and zero-calorie solutions, health management solutions, skin care solutions, shelf-life extension solutions, animal feed solutions, and industrial antioxidant solutions.

Among these, the skin care solution is formulated with L&P Foods’ self-produced, high-quality, stable, and reliable moisturizing ingredient oat β-glucan, together with the antioxidants TBHQ and BHA. This solution is designed to provide customers with a variety of effective formulation options for cosmetic applications.

Oat β-Glucan — A Natural Moisturizing Agent

Oat β-glucan is a widely used natural cosmetic ingredient. It is a polysaccharide extracted from oats and is included in China’s Inventory of Existing Cosmetic Ingredients (2021 Edition).

Oat β-glucan exhibits excellent moisturizing properties. It can rapidly penetrate the skin, replenish moisture, and effectively lock in water, thereby significantly improving dryness and rough skin conditions. Compared with conventional moisturizing ingredients, oat β-glucan has a stronger water-binding capacity, enabling it to attract moisture from the surrounding air, enhance skin hydration, and increase overall moisture content. Long-term use of cosmetics containing oat β-glucan can leave the skin soft, smooth, well-hydrated, and elastic [1].

In addition to its moisturizing effects, oat β-glucan also provides soothing and repairing benefits. It helps alleviate discomfort caused by skin sensitivity or irritation, reducing symptoms such as redness and itching. Moreover, oat β-glucan supports the repair of the damaged skin barrier and enhances the skin’s natural defense, protecting it from external aggressors. These properties make oat β-glucan an ideal ingredient for sensitive skin care formulations.

Tert-Butylhydroquinone and Butylated Hydroxyanisole — Revolutionary Ingredients in Cosmetic Applications

Tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) are both hydroquinone-derived compounds widely used in cosmetics and personal care products as preservatives and antioxidants. They help stabilize formulations and prevent the deterioration of fats, oils, and waxes in finished products. With a long history of use in cosmetics, both ingredients are included in China’s Inventory of Existing Cosmetic Ingredients (2021 Edition) and are recognized for their diverse functions and broad applications.

TBHQ and BHA exhibit outstanding antioxidant performance by neutralizing free radicals and inhibiting oxidative reactions. They help reduce skin damage caused by environmental pollution and ultraviolet radiation, thereby slowing skin aging. These effects contribute to the prevention of premature aging and hyperpigmentation, while maintaining skin smoothness and elasticity [2].

In addition, TBHQ and BHA possess strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which help inhibit bacterial growth and infection and reduce inflammatory responses. Moreover, they are considered effective skin-brightening ingredients, as they can suppress melanin production and block melanin deposition on the skin surface. This helps reduce pigmentation issues such as freckles, dark spots, and melasma, resulting in a brighter and more even skin tone.

As a result, TBHQ and BHA are widely used in various cosmetic products, including skincare, color cosmetics, and sunscreens. Common applications include creams, lotions, serums, facial masks, and sunscreen products [3].

The usage levels of tert-butylhydroquinone and butylated hydroxyanisole in cosmetics are very low, typically ranging from 0.01% to 0.1%. At these concentrations, they do not pose a risk to the skin, nor do they penetrate deeply enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, which is responsible for evaluating the safety of skincare and cosmetic ingredients, has reviewed the available studies on TBHQ and BHA. The panel concluded that TBHQ and BHA are safe for their current uses and at the current concentrations employed in cosmetic formulations.
